Garrett promotes Foundation to local schools

For Anne Garrett, giving back to others is just a part of her life. It's as natural as being active.

It's not surprising then that the 77-year-old record-setting runner from Oceanside has taken on a new role. She is the official spokesperson for the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation.

The Carlsbad-based Foundation was created to promote health and well being through incorporating regular physical fitness into daily life, utilizing education, special events, and instructive coaching. It is for all ages, but its sharpest focus is on encouraging physical activity among young people, who face an epidemic of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes that are an increasing threat, in part, because today's children aren't getting enough physical activity.

So, leading up to the 6th annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O'side Turkey Trot in downtown Oceanside on Thanksgiving Day, Garrett is talking with students in area schools, encouraging them to enter the race as she tries to pass along her passion for running and physical activity to a new generation.

Registration for the race, which has become an Oceanside holiday tradition in its sixth year, is available at the event website (http://www.osideturkeytrot.com/).

“Life is what you make it,” Garrett recently told the Coast News Group (see full article). “I had a very good husband, a sound marriage and two wonderful children. I am fortunate to still be able to run along the coast, and watch the waves and the birds. Life doesn’t get much better than that.”

For Garrett, being active as a child was just a way of life in the small village in Northern Ireland in which she was raised. With her slight build, Garrett continued being active all her life, eventually entering running events as a race walker shortly after turning 60. She continued entering events and switched to running them when she turned 72 years old. But her primary focus was caring for her husband, Jack, who was battling Alzheimer’s disease. After Jack died in January, Garrett devoted more time to training as a runner.

The results speak for themselves. In April, Garrett won her division at the Carlsbad 5000 in 25 minutes, 59 seconds. The time shattered the American female record for a 5K in her 75-79 age group that she had set the year before by 13 seconds.

“People come up to tell me that I am an inspiration,” she told the Coast News Group. “I don’t think I am, but it makes me feel good to know that I might be helping someone continue to do whatever it is they want to do.”

She hopes her new roles with the MYFBYE Foundation help her reach even more people.

Are you looking for some inspiration to start a running program with your friends or family members? Do you want help fighting the epidemic of childhood obesity? Do you want to see the difference that physical activity can make in lives? Kinane Events and the Move Your Feet Before You Eat®! Foundation are proud to offer an inspirational video that can get you dreaming big. (See the links above.)

The video stars six unique, healthy, happy and successful women who tell their story of how running has helped them reach their personal and professional goals. Among the featured athletes is Dr. Kelly Motadel of the Vista Community Clinic. Like the other featured athletes, Dr. Motadel serves as a role model, particularly for girls whom, the video points out, are twice as likely as boys to suffer childhood depression.

The video was produced by former OLN producer and Temecula resident, Jayne Romyn, Kathy Kinane and KOCT.

The free English version of "Dream Big video" is available in a 7-minute version or 28-minute version on the Kinane Events/Move Your Feet Before You Eat®! You Tube Website link. The free 28-minute video DVD is also available in a spanish version by contacting info@Kinane Events.
