Oceanside's celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX - the legislative milestone that changed the lives of millions of American women - was marked by impassioned speeches from pioneers of equal opportunities for women, as well as remarks from those whose lives have, in fact, been changed because they got the opportunity to compete in sports and life.

Among the speakers were eight pictured in the top photo montage. They are, clockwise from top left: Amanda Benedict, the first girl's high school prep player in San Diego County; Sheri Jennum, basketball player and coach of the Cal State San Marcos women's hoops team; Judy Sweet, former President of the NCAA; Mary Alice Hill, former Athletic Director at San Diego State; Jacqueline Hansen, former world record holder in the women's marathon; Cindy Gilbert Snow, an Olympian while still in high school in Oceanside; Ash Hayes, instrumental while working with Congress in the passage of Title IX; and Carol Oglesby, women's sports pioneer and recipient of the Women's Sports Foundation Billy Jean King Award.

Women's sports pioneer Billie Jean King (left) with Title IX Oceanside event director Kathy Kinane. When King beat Bobby Riggs in 1973, it inspired many, including Kinane. She took her lawn mowing money and bought her own Billie Jean King tennis shoes to play all of her sports - volleyball, tennis, and cross country at the time. King autographed the shoes at an appearance in San Diego in July of 2012.
